• Superb Start to Spring Fling’s 15th Birthday Open Studios Weekend

Scotland’s premier visual art and craft open studios event got off to a cracking start yesterday as 93 artists and makers threw open their doors to the public.

Among those taking part were hat maker Kay Ribbens, photographed who has been participating right from the start in 2003.

Kay, based near Kirkcowan, is renowned for her beautiful and extraordinary hand crocheted hats.

She said: “It’s been a great start to the weekend. People love Spring Fling because it’s always such high quality art and craft that’s exhibited, and it never rests on its laurels, there’s always offers lots that’s exciting and new.”

The event is taking place across Dumfries and Galloway from 27-29 May and includes painters, printmakers, woodworkers, ceramicists, photographers and many others.

Every participant is specially selected, and this year the line-up included seven artists and makers based at the Wasps studios in Kirkcudbright. Among them is Suzi Plunkett who creates incredibly detailed illustrations with thousands of hand drawn tiny dots and circles.

Standard Life Opening Event: Bloom

The Edinburgh International Festival was established in 1947 in the aftermath of the Second World War to ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’. 70 years later, Edinburgh has bloomed magnificently as the world’s Festival City, and its impact has pollinated cities across the globe, propagating new festivals throughout Europe, America and Asia.

To celebrate this special anniversary, multi award-winning 59 Productions will create an epic outdoor spectacle – transforming St Andrew Square into a magical night garden through light and sound installations and large-scale projection. Stroll around the Square as the buildings burst into life – immersing you in a fast moving world of colour, texture and sound.
Tap-Tastic Melvin Gets Movin’ with Top Teenage Edinburgh Dancer
Rhythm & Blues legend Movin' Melvin Brown, aged 72, and 17-year-old Edinburgh tap dancer Tamzin Burgess got together to compare moves in the heart of the capital.
Movin' Melvin is not only performing a high-octane Fringe show, Chuck Berry Lives! but will be teaching Edinburgh folk the basics of tap at special classes this Saturday.
Melvin, from the USA, loves to dance with talented local people everywhere he goes on his worldwide tours – and was mightily impressed with Tamzin who this month won the Leigh Anderson Memorial Trophy and the Edinburgh Tap trophy and was second in the Tap World Cup in Germany in May.
The Dancing With The Star – Movin’ With Melvin masterclass, which offers a fun route to health and fitness, will take place at Assembly Checkpoint on Saturday, 19 August at 11am.
And for those who love it and want to carry on with classes there’s the Mary Phelan school, where Tamzin trained, which has been in Edinburgh for 40 years. And tap classes are also available at Dance Base, Scotland’s National Centre for Dance in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.
