• Scottish Women’s Institute members are casting on to support the homeless this winter.
A cosier winter is in sight for homeless people across Scotland this winter, thanks to the Scottish Women’s Institutes (SWI) picking up their knitting needles and casting on in support of a national campaign to help make a difference to the lives of Big Issue vendors throughout the country.
As Scotland’s largest women’s organisation, and with many members talented sewers and knitters, the SWI is throwing its weight behind The Big Issue Foundation’s Big Knitathon and wants to ensure that this year’s effort is the biggest and best to date.
The women will be getting together to knit garments, raise funds and hold events, all of which will benefit homeless people in Scotland. And, in a powerful message to get others involved, they are providing two Big Knitters – knitting experts who will help promote the Big Knitathon by attending events, and answering knitting queries.

As the leading ladies and resident ‘Big Knitters’ for the campaign, mother and daughter Anne (73) and Jane Muirhead (47) are determined to encourage all members – from novice to seasoned professional – to keep their knitting needles by their side for the month of November.
The Big Knitathon is an annual campaign to encourage knitters across the country to create clothing for the vendors, sell the finished articles to raise funds, or hold fundraising events with all proceeds going to The Big Issue Foundation. Over the last three years over 2000 knitters have got their needles out for the Big Knitathon and raised over £22,500 to support The Big Issue Foundation’s work.
A new exhibition Helmand Return will open at the National War Museum in Edinburgh on Friday 27 February, showcasing the latest body of work from renowned photographer Robert Wilson. The exhibition documents British troops’ final tour of Afghanistan and builds on his 2008 project Helmand: Faces of Conflict, which was exhibited at the National War Museum in 2009.

In 2014 Wilson revisited Afghanistan as an official war artist, tasked with recording the British troops' final operational tour. The resulting exhibition offers a unique perspective on a much documented conflict, allowing a rare insight into the process of withdrawing from a war zone. In each of the pictures, Wilson captures the essence of the human and logistical challenges faced during the transfer of responsibility and withdrawal, including many never-before recorded sights both on and off base. Images include a soldier sculpting a metal rose from shrapnel for a loved one back home, intimate glimpses of life in the camp and beautifully composed portraits of the men and women preparing to head home.
From today 4th February until the 28th March 2016, St Andrew Square Garden will be taken over by illuminated stick men as part of this year’s amazing light installation KEYFRAMES.

Pic caption: Production manager Hannah Ayre meets one of the stickmen on a park bench

Created by French artists collective Groupe LAPS, KEYFRAMES uses LED lights tubes to create multiple static stick figures that, when paired with a soundtrack, flash on and off in a choreographed display to imitate movement.

KEYFRAMES has previously exhibited in Singapore, Jerusalem, France, Spain and the Netherlands, and debuted in the UK in Durham at the 2013 Lumiere Festival. The free exhibition in St Andrew Square marks KEYFRAMES Scotland debut and will give the public the opportunity to experience the architecture and environment of St Andrew Square in a different light.
The 80 light sculptures take over St Andrew Square Garden illuminated in sequence to an original musical composition. They are installed around the square to create an immersive environment and will allow the public to wander through the space.
Caption Details:

Two of Scotland’s most admired authors were at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (SNPG) in Edinburgh today for the unveiling of the latest addition to the national collection - a striking new portrait of renowned crime writer Ian Rankin. The meticulous and thoughtful painting was commissioned from Edinburgh-based artist Guy Kinder by another of Scotland’s most high-profile contemporary writers, Alexander McCall Smith, who has generously presented it to the Gallery.
Guy Kinder’s insightful portrait depicts Rankin in a contemplative pose, in the surroundings of the Oxford Bar, the Edinburgh pub famously frequented by both his fictional creation, Inspector Rebus, and the author himself. The portrait was commissioned in 2013 by McCall Smith, the bestselling author and friend of Ian Rankin, and was first shown, to great acclaim, in the annual exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in May of last year.
Following an unveiling at the SNPG on 25 March, the portrait will join the Gallery’s rich collection of portraits which celebrate the achievements of Scotland’s great literary figures, from Burns and Scott to Stevenson and Barrie.
Linlithgow Palace, 5 July 2014 & 6th July 2014

Linlithgow Palace provided a spectacular background for a sensational show of medieval skill and chivalry today, Saturday 5th July. Crowds gathered to experience the thunder of hooves and the crack of lances splintering as the knights battled it out in the Jousting arena. The jousting continues tomorrow, 6th July, at the peel, in front of the palace, which is perhaps most famously know as the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots.
• Beltane Fire Festival 2014 Picture Shows: The Reds as The procession passes under Fire Arch

The festival takes place on Calton Hill. It is a procession, which starts at the National Monument and proceeds anti-clockwise around the path meeting various groups along the way. The procession is driven by the beat of drums which urge it inexorably towards summer. At the procession’s head is the May Queen and the Green Man, followed by a cavalcade of characters who are intrinsically linked to them and their journey.

Their destination is punctuated by various groups who either help or hinder their progress towards the Green Man’s fate and the May Queen’s destiny.

After a dramatic stage performance signifying the inception of summer the May Queen and Green Man spark the birth of summer by lighting a huge bonfire. The performance then moves into its community phase. All the participants congregate in a place called the Bower. From here the finishing movements of the festival are played out in a dance of reds and whites.
